SEO Search Engine Optimization Marketing, Why is It So Mysterious?
SEO, search engine
optimization is simply a term for optimizing a website so that it
gives the search engines what they want in a way they want it.
There are two types of search engine
optimization:
On page optimization is
accomplished in the html coding of the website as well as in the
content that is seen by the visitors to the website.
Off page optimization is accomplished by
utilizing links from other, related websites, article submissions,
social bookmarking sites and mini-net development to name a few.
The first part of on page optimization takes place when a website is
being developed. The website designer starts by placing things
like the document type, page title tags, meta description tags and
other relevant information about the website.
Most of the information that's entered at this stage is not seen by
the visitor to the website.
The title tag is displayed in the upper border
of the users browser screen and usually the first 95 characters are
shown.
When designed
correctly, it gives the visitor a thumbnail sketch as to what the
page is about. Many SEO ignorant web designers will simply
title this "home."
That title does nothing to let the search engines know what the page
is about and makes their job a guessing game which results in lower
placement with the search engine results.
The meta description tag is what is displayed
by most search engines when you see the results of your search.
It is designed to be what compels a visitor to click to your site
instead of one of the other ones displayed along side yours.
The meta keywords tag tells the search engines
which keywords or keyword phrases you are trying to get placed for
in their results.
Even
many experienced website designers make the mistake of trying to go
for too many search terms which only dilutes the SEO effectiveness
of the web page.
Ideally, you should optimize each page for one keyword or phrase.
There are many other things like:
robots.txt file to
tell the search engines how to "read" your site
sitemap similar to
above but with a twist
keyword density to
emphasize your content (not too much)
keyword prominence
(best placement of the keywords)
use of internal text
links (pointing to key places in your site)
use of alt titles for
graphics (to aid impaired visitors, etc)
These are a few of the on
page search engine optimization techniques you must use to attract
the placement you want.
Off page optimization, or offline SEO, is
everything you do from an external perspective to optimize your
website.
Social
bookmarking sites, blog comments you make, (on blogs related to your
website) with a link to your website, videos posted on you tube and
other video sites, squidoo pages and hubpages you create can point
to your website.
You
can write articles that have links back to your website.
ideally these links will be divided about 50/50 between pointing to
your home page and deep linking to pages inside your website.
Two way links are much more diluted because the
search engines know you can ask someone to link to your site in
return for you linking got their site.
Links that point to your site from other
related sites, especially one way links from authority sites will
juice your SEO considerably.
I'm sure you're getting the picture, by now,
that there are a million and one ways to optimize your website for
the search engines.
